Toys R Store, which has struggled to attract customers, is now exploring selling a new range of toys, including toys for children and adults, to compete with the bigger toy companies such as Hasbro and HasbroToyShop.
The Toys R US, which operates in the U.S. and Canada, has been selling Lego bricks and building sets since the 1980s.
It has been growing in popularity with younger customers, particularly in China, and has expanded into Asia.
But Toys R USA, which is based in New York, has struggled in recent years to gain more than a few thousand customers, said a person familiar with the plans.
The company will also explore licensing its existing products, the person said.
Toys R USA is the parent company of Toys R Kids, a Lego toy store that sells a range of Lego-themed products.
Toystore’s parent company, Toys “R” Us, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
A Toys R Stores spokesman declined to comment on the plans, saying the company has no comment on pending announcements.
The Toys “S” retail chain has had a tumultuous year.
Tough news for Toys R stores: Toys R Toys, a toy store chain with more than 4,000 locations in the United States, will open its first store in Washington, D.C. The new store will be at 1401 Massachusetts Avenue NW.
The mall is among the hottest in Washington and has been home to the retailer since the mid-1980s.
Tricks R Toys said the new store would be the first of its kind in the nation.
It will be able to offer its popular line of bricks and construction sets, including “Star Wars” themed Lego toys.
The store will include a playroom, a lounge, and an arcade, Toys R’s website said.
The Washington, DC, store will not have the iconic red brick building that stands next to the Toys R store, said one of the people familiar with Toys R plans.
Instead, the store will have a more upscale atmosphere, one of these people said.
Toys R toys will be available at the store, which will feature a large selection of toys and games, and the store also will feature interactive toys for toddlers and preschoolers.
The new Toys R will have shelves of the same size as the current Toys R locations, the people said, but the store’s exterior will be more like the Toys “Z” store, a Toys R location in Washington that opened in 2005.
